A smooth curve \(\gamma\colon I\to M\) on a smooth manifold \(M\) is called geodesic if its acceleration vanishes, i.e. \(D_t\gamma'\equiv 0\).

A geodesic regarding a Levi-Civita connection is called Riemannian geodesic, which is usually referred to as geodesic.
